About the Book

We're sorry; this specific copy is no longer available. Here are our closest matches for The Demi of Attica by Leake, William Martin.

Description:

307 pp. Folding plate, Plan of the Sacred Buildings at Eleusis. Original hard boards with black leather, gilt filet to boards, spine with 4 raised bands with gilt in the compartments. Spine title indicates this is Vol. II of a set of Leake's works (Vol. I, which is not present, apparently being on Athens). Spine bottom is chipped away, joints cracking, spine bit dry and fragile, board edges rubbed, interior marbled end papers, first fly and title page have numerous owner inscriptions and those two pages are also chipped at the gutter and starting to come away from the binding. Contents page has a short smudge. The folding plate at the rear is loose (it indicates it belongs to Vol. II and is Plate II -- presumably Plate I was in the absent first volume). Otherwise clean. Bit fragile but all here and quite presentable. This is a stand-alone and complete copy of Leake's very scarce "The Demi of Attica", hard to find in any edition. Includes Geography of Attica, the Demi of the plain of Athens, also of Paralia and Mesogaea, also of Diacria and Mount Parnes; The Demi to the west of the plain of Athens including Salamis; and a catalog of the Demi. ; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Book Description Forgotten Books, 2017. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from The Topography of Athens, and the Demi, Vol. 2: The Demi of Attica In my Opinion, says Herodotus the Persians, when they entered Attica, were not less numerous either by land or sea, than when they arrived at Thermopylae and Sepias; for against the men who had perished in the storms at sea, and in the battles at Thermopylae and Artemisium, I will place those who had not yet followed the king; namely, the Melieusos, the Dorians, the Locri, and the Boeotians; the last of whom joined him with all their forces, except those belonging to Thespise and Plataea. He was reinforced also by the Carystii, the Andrii and Tenii, as well as by all the islanders except those of the five cities which I have already mentioned. The Patii, however, awaited at Cythnus the event of the war; all the others joined Xerxes at Phale rum; and thus the farther be advanced in Greece, the more numerous his armament became.
