First Edition in the original pictorial boards, professionally restored by a book conservator. This is the 1st edition, 1st printing with Humpty Dumpty on the verso of the dedication leaf, with the copyright date of 1901 as well as the matching date on the title page date. Edited and illustrated by Denslow. His later illustrations, in a similar style, for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, earned him wide acclaim from readers and critics, alike, earning him a hallowed place in the history of 20th century book illustration. In this volume, each left side page has the text of nursery rhyme hand lettered by Fred W. Goudy. Facing each rhyme, on the right side, is a Denslow color plate in bright colors, printed on a green background. The text pages are illustrated in color. With pictorial end papers. The cover boards and end papers have been restored by a book binder, including a new green paper spine, new spine label using the typeface and text from the front cover, and some minor repair to the edges of the end papers. The extremities of the cover, especially at the corners are worn down to the boards, otherwise the illustrations and titling are bright and crisp. Remnants of tape remain on the inch nearest the spine, on the front and back covers. This was amateurishly used to hold the book together prior to our professional repair. The interior pages are clean and unmarked, with slight age toning along margins, that does not impinge on text or illustrations. Tiny inked inscription on verso of front free end paper: "To Marian, from Shoe, Jany. 1, 1906" with 1/2 inch square label of prior owner at top of front paste down. Binding is square and solid. Un-paginated, but 96 pages. This is one of Denslow's finest illustrated books. A very scarce book in very good condition since most of this edition has been lost to time and careless reading by very young children. A valuable addition to a collector's library. World Catalog, OCLC Number: 2712170 *** Please note, due to the size of this volume, expect additional shipping charges for delivery outside the continental United States. Inquire as to exact cost.
