About this Item

Boston, 1805. 12mo, later leatherette over contemporary paper covered boards, 220 pp. Printed for the Author by David Carlisle. Second edition, issued the same year as the first. Christopher Caustic was a pseudonmy for Thomas Green Fessenden. Fessenden was a New Hampshire born writer, inventor and lawyer. "After returning to Boston in 1804, Fessenden published a partisan political satire, Democracy Unveiled (1805). In this bitter poem, Fessenden's Dr. Caustic attacked the Democratic party, including Thomas Jefferson, and promoted the views of the Federalists. Opposed to what he felt were the Jacobin policies of the Democrats, Fessenden also attempted to establish a Federalist paper in New York, the Weekly Inspector (1806-1807). The Inspector failed because Fessenden's high-Federalist opinions were too unpopular in Democratic New York and because his wit was not as sharp as that found in the clever periodical Salmagundi (1807-1808), whose editors derided Fessenden's persona Dr. Caustic. However, with the publication in Philadelphia of his Register of Arts (1808), a collection of information on scientific discoveries, Fessenden began to shift his focus from politics." - ANB. A very good minus copy with foxed contents, ownership signature to front free endpaper. Otherwise sound and quite usable. Scarce. Sabin 24212. Bookseller Inventory # 14974
