This is part of what must have been a series, Collection Historique Illustree. Ange Pitou was a passionate Royalist in the French Revolution, and was deported in 1797-one of 53 deportees-to la Guyane (Cayenne in French Guiana) when the Jacobins in the National Directory feared that the new revolutionary government would be taken over by the Royalists. Pitou was a deputy in the directory. This is the record of the trip and the life in Cayenne taken from French government documents and Pitou's journal and memoirs, with citations, footnotes, and many, many illustrations. An index to "Members of the National Directory" mentioned in the text is neatly inked on a blank page at the rear of the book. In French. Hard cover, half-leather, worn; the clothbound parts of the cover are fine; hinges firm; interior excellent. The present binding was done by Waldorf Fine Bindings in St. Paul, Minnesota. Very discreet library marks in the interior (none on the cover)--perforated library ownership mark on title page, "withdrawn" stamp on the obverse, and a small library stamp on back page.
