About this Item

Two title pages (1 edited by T.S. Ralph, 1849, and 1 facsimile of the original Tho. Cotes, 1632). With 1 leaf of plates. Contemporary half-vellum over marbled boards; an excellent copy from the library of Jerry Stannard. This special Latin edition is here first edited by T[homas] S[hearman] Ralph from Johnson's original, Descriptio itineris plantarum, 1632. Johnson (1600-44) became a medical practitioner and botanist after apprenticing to the London Apothecary. He was a prominent member of the Society of Apothecaries and published an account of early botanical excursions of the Society into Kent and to Hampstead Heath. This included a list of the plants observed and is probably the earliest English flora. Johnson is well known for his revision of Gerard, first published in 1633 and reprinted in 1636. He added over 800 species and over 700 woodcuts. The present work is quite scarce. Bookseller Inventory # 10643
