About this Item

COXE, Daniel. A Description of the English Province of Carolana, By the Spaniards Call'd Florida, And By the French La Louisiane. As Also of the Great and Famous River Meschacebe or Mississippi, The Five Vast Navigable Lakes of Fresh Water, and the Parts Adjacent. London. 1727. [54],122pp. Contemporary calf, neatly rebacked in matching style. Old exlib. bookplate and ink stamps, including two in the text, else clean internally. A good, solid copy. Lacks the map. HOWES C826, "b". CHURCH 886. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 727/46. CLARK I:68. SABIN 17280. The third issue of this important work, first published in 1722, differing from the first issue only by the substitution of a new titlepage to make the tract appear more current to a contemporary audience. One of the first works in English to extensively describe the Southeast. Coxe, who claimed grants of much of the South, sought to arouse British concern over the area's occupation by the French. Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Louisiana are described. The large folding map is often lacking from copies of the book, including the copy at hand. The elder Daniel Coxe was physician to Charles II and Queen Anne; his son inherited his claims to grants in the South and produced this book. The text, based on memoirs of trappers and explorers, contains much information published for the first time and is credited with containing the first published proposal of a political confederation of the North American colonies.
