First American edition. Twelvemo. 94 pp. plus all five lithograph plates (three of which are folding and bound at the rear). Original sand-grain green cloth, expertly rebacked to style. A blank endpaper at the rear has a small piece missing. Overall, a very good copy.News of the proposals for the Liverpool & Manchester Railroad spread rapidly to continental Europe and North America leading to many visits and inspections particularly from France and Germany. It the first railway to rely exclusively on steam power, with no horse-drawn traffic permitted at any time; the first to be entirely double track throughout its length; the first to have a signalling system; the first to be fully timetabled; the first to be powered entirely by its own motive power; and the first to carry mail. The American translator of this book makes the point that the published works by Wood, Stephenson, Tredgold and others were too voluminous and abstruse for any but professional men but that Moreau had managed to "cullÉsufficient to exhibit all the ordinary operations of Rail Roads and had explained constructions. in a plain and intelligible manner.".
