About this Item

First edition. 8vo. pp. 12; large folding frontispiece engraving of Bern with key; closed tear to margin of engraving, else very good in contemporary plain wrappers. This uncommon item was a guide to the panorama exhibited at London’s Leicester Square. Barker, who ran the Panorama at this time, based the view of Bern on sketches made on the spot, and the booklet reproduces the entire view in two sections on the large folding plate that forms the frontispiece. The text offers a four-page description of Bern, followed by explanations of the sites and distant mountains shown in the panorama. The final three pages offer a “Description of the High Alps”, with brief paragraphs on 12 peaks that include the Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn, Finsteraarhorn, Eiger, Monch, and the Jungfrau.
