About this Item

These volumes are about the collection of the Duke of Wellington at Apsley House in London. 2 volumes tightly bound in 3/4 vellum with both the spines and the covers having very good, unworn and unbumped edges. Gilt lettered spines and gilt coats-of-arms on the front covers. All 4 covers are perfectly attached with no cracking - either internally or externally. The vellum is bending somewhat on the covers which is allowing the ivory cloth on the covers to fray along a few of the vellum/cloth margins. Some slight soiling and spotting to the cloth and the vellum. Pages: xviii, 231; 235-472. The pages and the plates have varying degrees of foxing - some heavy. Else the pages are clean, are still crisp and are tightly bound. The inner covers have the bookplate of Amos Tuck French with an inked gift inscription in 1901 stating that it is a gift from his mother - Ellen Tuck French. On the blank back of the Contents page is attached a 1934 newspaper clipping about the fourth Duke of Wellington's demise. Also attached is a clipped 7 line extract of a letter about Herbert Eaton's assistance in the preparation of this book. Bookseller Inventory # 10300
