Title: Descriptive Mentality from the Head, Face ...
Publisher: David McKay, Publisher , Philadelphia
Publication Date: 1899
Edition: 1st Edition
Small 4to. Blue cloth with gilt lettering and pictorial stamping. vi, 222pp, (2pp ads). Top edge gilt. Frontispiece, numerous line drawings. Very good. Mild edgewear. A tight and handsome first edition of this bizarre attempt to join phrenology, physiognomy and palmistry into a new "science." Front flyleaf bears the pencilled ownership signature, dated March 1928, of Carl Tolpo (1901-76), a sculptor and painter noted for his Abraham Lincoln busts; later he dates it again "2-21-72." Laid in is a quirky 8½" X 11" blank sheet on which Tolpo crudely pencils a left-facing silhouette of a head, captioned "Profile reading," lettering the forehead "A," the nose "B," the mouth "C" and the chin "D" and adding to the side, "Idea for simplified computerized reading using photo profile imprint." Tolpo was apparently an adherent. Also laid in is a delicate 8pp pamphlet, 16mo, titled "Synopsis of the Merton Course of Instruction in the Art of Judging People," published by the Merton Institute in Chicago. Tolpo pencils "1924 or 25" at the top of this undated item. Good only. Outer wrapper worn, with corner chip on last couple leaves. Medical quackery at its best!. Bookseller Inventory # 38579
