The book narrates the historical development of a concept the concept of design in modern times. It is also about how design has come to be what it is today which is a veritable global phenomenon. As such one of its aims is to consider design in light of the new end of the millennium dispensations characterized by the concerns of emergent societies of the world especially those of Asia and Africa. And hence it naturally needs to look beyond the conventional historical sources. The initial part of the narrative is a kind of a prehistory which in fact is an overview of those historical forces that directly influenced design and shaped it into its modern avatara that of a volatile international movement. The examination of these historical forces is once again conditioned by the same concerns namely preserving the local identity and ethos while living in a global village. By way of a parallel process the book also tries to assess design in general and modern design in particular in the context of India. It does so by making direct references to those concepts from India's rich cultural traditions that strike parallels to those philosophical and theoretical underpinnings and thought processes which have contributed in turning design into a modern global phenomenon. Later there are special references to the arrival of modernism and the Modern Movement in the Indian subcontinent toward the final decades of the nineteenth century. The Indian Parallel ends with an examination of factors that helped invite modern design to a newly independent nation in the mid twentieth century triggering off crucial developments in the realms of design profession and design education. 218 pp. Bookseller Inventory # 74472
