About this Item

11 page leaflet, very good condition. Excerpt: Michigan joined the union as a free state on January 26, 1837. At that time, some prominent citizens owned slaves and defended their right to do so. At the same time, during the era of slavery, more than 45,000 slaves traveled through Detroit on their way to Canada. Detroit was a major station on the Underground Railroad System. Detroit was one of the final U.S. terminals on the Underground Railroad for runaways entering Canada. Numerous citizens were involved in many ways, and locations in the city played a key role in the operation of this secret, complex network of free blacks, former slaves, and white abolitionists. In secretive communications, the code word for Detroit was Midnight. Abolitionists and conductors often used this word when referring to Detroit. Size: USA / America / Americana / United States.
