About this Item

First edition. Red cloth lettered in white. 167 pp. Illustrated with photographic plates of scenes from the stageplay. Adapted from the Hungarian original for the American stage by Oliver Herford. Very good, some loss to the white title and author lettering on front cover, spine rubbed, light even soiling to the cloth. There is a pencil gift inscription on the front pastedown dated April 15, 1909 with the notation "we saw the show". The stageplay originally starred British actor George Arliss in the title role and when director Michael Curtiz filmed a silent version in Hungary in 1918 (and released in the U.S. in 1921), Arliss revived role in his film debut. (The film was thought to have been lost but was rediscoved and preserved in 2011). Ferenc's "The Devil" was extremely popular with audiences both on the stage and in early movies; there were three film adaptations before Curtis' including one in 1908 by D.W. Griffith.
