About this title
In Diary of a Discontent, a disillusioned man records his thoughts about life in a world from which he feels increasingly alienated. He spends his days wandering through the city, spying on his beautiful neighbor, impersonating a college professor, and writing controversial essays for the local newspaper—all the while dreaming of a pseudonymous existence. Though he is aware of the loneliness that has crept into his life, he seems oblivious to the absurdity that accompanies his various endeavors.
This collection also includes the stories Demise, A Continual Farewell, and Grains of the Golden Sand.
Alexander Lurikov’s stories are filled with eccentric characters—loners, idlers, impostors, voyeurs, and other misfits who are obsessed with the past and often unable to separate their dreams and fantasies from reality. They lead contemplative, melancholy lives, and though they are determined to remain at a distance from the rest of the world, they frequently find themselves stumbling into bizarre situations with strangers.
