Octavo in tan cloth covered boards with printed paper title lable front cover. 124 pp. Frontispiece portrait engraving of Roebling. Extremely scarce. Privately printed translation of the journey to the U.S. of the patriarch of the Roebling family of cable manufacturing and bridge building fame. Johann (John) A. Roebling was famed for his design of wire rope suspension bridges, particularly the Brooklyn Bridge and Cincinnati-Covinton Bridge. Fine, slight bump to the fore edge of the front cover. If not for a split in the binding between the front flyleaf and the frontispiece verso, condition would be VG to VG+. Monor shelf wear and soiling to boards, dents (but no breaks) to backstrap, and age darkening to pages. Corners unbumped. Roebling was a civil engineer who gained fame as the designer of the Brooklyn Bridge. He and his brother, on land they purchased after emigrating from Prussia, established the town of Saxonburg as a community for German settlers. This book is his diary during that voyage, which includes very specific and detailed information about the American political and social situation, Roebling's plans upon arriving in the United States, conditions on the ship and of its passengers, and the voyage itself.
