About this Item

RUSSELL, William Howard. My Diary North and South. London: Bradbury & Evans, 1863. 1st ed. Two vols. Large folding map. A near fine set in orig. cloth. Howes R-540. Nevins I, p.155. Wright R-137. See In Tall Cotton 161. The author was a well-known war correspondent for the London Times. "[I]n March 1861, [Russell] arrived in the United States as a special correspondent for the London Times.Russell was a caustic and penetrating critic of both the North and South, and succeeded in stirring up a storm of hostility in both sections. He irked the North especially by his account of the rout of the Federals at First Manassas. He stirred up hostility in the South by his phobia against slavery, which he denounced time and again as barbarism. Yet he found much to praise in the South, where he met all the principal officials, civil and military, thought highly of them, and felt that the South would probably never be conquered. He found universal acclaim of the Confederacy, saw none of the Union feeling which Seward and Lincoln had talked so much about, and seemed to enjoy the planters' hospitality. He wrote without restraint, scruples, or delicacy in describing his associations with individual Southerners" Coulter, 403. "His collection of experiences and observations has great historical value."--Larned. Bookseller Inventory # 923
