Book Description Boston: William F Gill & Company, 1876. Octavo, original publisher's gilt-stamped green cloth. 288 pages. Frontispiece facing each of the two title pages. Full title of the second story is "The Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices" (pp. 165-288). A very good copy. When Collins was 28, he met Dickens through a mutual acquaintance. Dickens had known Collins' father, and his friendship with the son lasted until Dickens' death in 1870. Collins achieved fame through his 25 novels, over 50 short stories, some 15 plays, and more than 100 works of non-fiction. He became one of the best-paid Victorian writers. Dickens asked Collins to participate in his amateur theater presentations, and Collins published in Dickens' journals, All the Year Round and Household Words. Soon they began collaborating on plays and stories. The present work is one of their best-known and best-loved efforts. (From Philip V. Cunningham, Contributing Editor, Victorian Web, and Faculty of Education, Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, Ontario -on line].) The two authors collaborated on the play, No Thoroughfare, which was staged for the first time at the New Royal Adelphi Theatre, London, in 1867. It appears in the present work rewritten in story form, but with the "Acts" retained. Dickens' short story, "The Two Apprentices. With a History of Their Lazy Tour", first appeared in 1857. In 1866 it was referred to as "The Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices," the title it bears in the present book, although it is shortened for the overall title of this work. (See John B. Podeschi, Dickens and Dickensiana, Section B.). Bookseller Inventory # 11461
