Contemporary calf, gilt-stamped lettering (tho very faded) in second spine compartment (5 raised bands); 8vo (208x124mm). Includes the preface to the London octavo, a history of the English language, a grammar; and the bulk of the text block, a general dictionary, printed in two columns. Binding a bit scuffed and worn, and chipped at spine tips, but still tight and square. Some faint browning and foxing throughout, but overall nice and clean. With a handsome, even calligraphic inscription on the FFEP, "To Helen H. Buckley, Beloved companion on many a journey from A to Z, with deep appreciation of her fine qualities / Frank H. Mizetelly [?] / New York March 2, '36." The first octavo edition was published in London, 1756, abridged by Johnson; a series of one- or two-volume editions followed in the 1760s, this one published in Dublin, others in London.
