[xvi], 312, 280 pp & 593 pp. With half titles. Octavo. In what appears to be the original calf with gilt compartments to the spine, added? Overlaid spine labels with title (faded away) and volume number. Leather covers have some scuffing, corners rubbed, spine tips bit pulled, especially Vol. I. Interiors have some moderate foxing, owner name on title page in black flourished ink, otherwise clean and unmarked. Published anonymously, but Feraud, a French Jesuit grammarian was responsible. "We owe to him the Dictionnaire grammatical de la langue française , Avignon, 1761, of which he gave a considerably enlarged fourth edition in Paris in 1786 (2 vol. In-8 °). The editors of the Library of a man of taste have said of this work, in which the principles of grammar are set out in the clearest and most convenient order, that it is one of the best repertoires ever published in the 18th century." One of the first to examine the rules of spelling in French and try to regularize spelling across the country. Quite scarce in this 4th improved edition. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
