About this title

Synopsis:

250 glossy pages, 8.5x11", cloth with dust jacket, full color and sharp b/w photos throughout. "Back in the day, automobile dealers would loan you a car to drive for a weekend to entice you to buy. So it was with the locomotive manufacturers. "Diesels festooned in builder's colors would be seen leading freight and passenger trains, usually followed by a company laboratory or dynamometer car to test performance. Today, the field of players has been greatly reduced and minority builders (covered in chapter 7) have risen to take on the challenge of erecting new products or remanufacturing components, forever changing the face of railroading. But the diesel demonstrator will always be the prototype sent out to strut its stuff, and can be seen even today only in fewer numbers. "Covers Alco, Baldwin, EMD, Fairbanks Morse, GE, Lima, mMinority builders, rosters, vintage builder advertisements in each chapter. Includes 50 page photo section showing the demonstrator at work."
