About this title

Synopsis:

When fifteen-year-old Libby is exposed to a mysterious infection, she must struggle with the long recovery process and the prospect that she may never walk again.

From School Library Journal:

Gr 9 Up-As this moving novel opens, 15-year-old Libby frets over whether Jesse, the new boy at school, will ever like her. A day later, she is struggling to survive as a mysterious infection threatens her life. Libby's recovery is slow and painful and she realizes that she may never walk again. As the months pass, she begins a relationship with Jesse, learns to use a wheelchair, and discovers that her life, while forever changed, is far from over. Meanwhile, Libby reunites with a childhood friend from whom she had been separated for several years and is able to help the girl work through her difficult home life and unhealthy relationship with a man too old for her. The characters are fresh and appealing, although a beautiful, confident, independent social worker in a wheelchair is too good to be true. Libby gets angry but never succumbs to self-pity as she describes the difficulty of everyday tasks, from taking a shower to ascending a flight of stairs. The reactions of family and friends ring especially true. The book turns preachy only once, when Libby's classmates band together against an insensitive principal who won't let her return to school. Otherwise, Keith manages to steer clear of melodrama and didacticism. Some of the British slang may puzzle readers but most words are clear from the context. This novel will appeal to readers who enjoy inspiring stories with strong characters.-Miranda Doyle, Notre Dame High School, Belmont, CA
