About this Item

First edition. Emerald green cloth covered boards decorated in black and lettered in blindstamp and with spine decorated in gilt and black. 407 pp. Frontispiece engraving of the author and three additional illustrations in the text. Despite the rather odd sub-titling, a work on digestion and health told in narrative form. Among the many sections are included: mastication, sense of tase, what causes hunger?, sunshine and digestion, water, cold drinks during meals, "How fat people can get themselves into shipshape", 'How thin people may become plump", "Noises in the Bowels" etc. A tight, bright example, Dr Dio was a well-known advocate of physical education in the late 19th century.
