About this Item

First Edition. Paperbound, 4 1/2Ó x 7Ó. A truly fascinating and informative work documenting the research and eventual acquisition of the amazing collection of childrenÕs books and related materials from Elisabeth BallÕs library which were donated to Indiana UniversityÕs Lilly Library by the George and Frances Ball Foundation. Some examples from the collection include, Kate GreenawayÕs Mother Goose in proof state inscribed by the artist, two of Charles LambÕs individual tales from Shakespeare, a first edition of Christopher SmartÕs Hymns for the Amusement of Children, A Compleat History of the Life and Marvelous Actions of Tom Thumb, and the only known copy of a 1771 printing of the Renowned History of Giles Gingerbread. In addition to the 8500 books and over 1200 manuscripts directly related to the childrenÕs book collection, Miss Ball had more than 4000 nonjuvenile titles, including a copy of William BlakeÕs Book of Job. Illustrated in color throughout. The front cover is illustrated with a reproduction of Elisabeth Ball OakhurstÕs beautiful art deco bookplate. Fine in stiff glossy printed wrappers.
