About this title

Here is a cookbook truly created with love, a book that reflects the glowing conviviality of friends and family enjoying good food, good times, and good company. The Dinah shore American Kitchen brings you more than a collection of recipes. It brings Dinah herself directly into your kitchen, adding a pinch of herbs, tasting a stew, and sharing the warmth and down-to-earth charm that have made her one of the most popular celebrities of all time. Dinah shore's love of food was first nurtured by the delectable cooking of the American South, but - like Americans all over the country - her appreciate of fine dining as grown to encompass the cuisines of many countries and many ethnic origins, and The Dinah Shore American Kitchen reflect this international flavor. In over 300 of her own recipes and those contributed by friends and colleagues, Dinah captures the spirit of cooking today with the same attention to good health that she brings to good taste. Dinah's own kitchen is stocked not only with incomparable fresh produce from her California home, but with the ingredients to make delicious and soul-satisfying dishes in every category, from all over the world - soups from Chinese to Country-Style Split Pea; salads from Malaysian Chicken with Peanuts to Arugula and Spinach with White Wine-Honey Vinaigrette; meats that range from Middle Eastern Lamb Stew with Prunes to Juicy Tender Pot Roast; fish and poultry grilled California-style or spiced Cal-Mex; vegetables that are Southern-smothered or stir-fried Asian; and a variety of baked goods and desserts to satisfy the sweet tooth of any nationality. From developing the recipes to styling the mouth-watering photograph, Dinah's passion for good food is evident on every page of this book. So invite Dinah into your own home and cook with her some of the hundreds of delicious meals she's enjoyed with her own friends and family. It will make you feel as if Dinah herself were sharing a potluck dinner in your kitchen.

From Publishers Weekly:

It's difficult to tell what's particularly American or "homestyle" about these recipes from the television personality from Tennessee--unless, of course, the combination of adjectives is a code for "amateur." In lieu of outlining Shore's approach to food, cooking or entertaining, the introduction concentrates, rather oddly, on the weight that the celebrity and her friends gained while devising the recipes that follow. An incoherently eclectic smorgasbord, the fare here includes dishes that nod blithely at many ethnic cuisines without scrupling over authenticity (chicken breasts with kielbasa a la Cordon Bleu; a dip featuring canned artichoke hearts and jalapenos; shrimp prepared with vodka, ginger, scallion, soy sauce and peanut oil). The desserts, however, feature an array of quintessentially hospitable Southern pies (buttermilk, chess, sweet potato-praline) and sweets. And cooks whose idols are in the entertainment industry, not the kitchen, will certainly lap up Shore's goodnatured name-dropping: "Barbara and Frank Sinatra were coming to dinner. . . . Try the meal Shore served them to the tune of 'Come Fly with Me.' " Photos not seen by PW. First serial to the Star, second serial to the National Inquirer.
