This is the first mention of the quantum field theory of charged spinless particles; the basis of what has become known as the Pauli-Weisskopf theory, which eventually grew out of a seminar given by Pauli at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (1935-36), in which Pauli attacked the Dirac equation of the electron. âThe detection of the positron was considered by nearly everyone as a vindication of Diracâs theory.â [Enz], but not by Pauli, who particularly disliked Diracâs picture of the positron as a hole in an infinite sea of negative energy electrons. [Schweber]. âThe first one to seek a semiclassical treatment of the Dirac equation I the spirit of the WKB-method appears to be Pauli, who gave a solution for a special case. He found that in the semiclassical limit the translational motion is independent of the spin degrees of freedom. Because of this fact the formalism was criticized by de Broglie with the remark that one would expect âclassical objectsâ like electromagnetic moments to influence the trajectories.â [Bolte & Keppeler].
