About this Item

Small (32mo.) slim volume in ribbed and blindatsmped dark brown cloth, title stamped in gilt on front cloth. 125 pps. Rev. Dimmick, pastor of the North Church in Newburyport, Massachusetts, prepared this discourse in response to a letter received from the directors of the Western Rail Road Corporation. At the time, the very infancy of the American railroad expansion, the company was making application to the state legislature for numerous grants, concessions, etc; they solicited comment from ministers throughout the state as to the moral advantages of this new means of transportation. Rev. Dimmick endorsed railraods, saying, in part, "Of what charater shall that influence be? Among the results will doubtless be, quickened intellect, an extended acquaintance of the different branches of the human race., greater comprehension of thought in the mass of the community, and a more ready accomplishment of many desirable objects." He also voiced some reservations (naturally) and went on for 125 pages about it. A tight example, modest rubbing to the cloth but gilt lettering still bright; narrow white smudge on spine. Foxing throughout the text. The front free endpaper bears a gift inscription from 1936 presenting the book to noted railroad bibliophile Cameron Blaikie. (Sabin 20190) 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall.
