About this Item

Engraved portrait, [8], 424p, [48]. Late 19th century blind stamped brown calf with gilt ruled edges. Marbled end papers. Old bookseller catalogue description pasted to the inside front board. Second edition. First published in 1698. Algernon Sidney (1623-1683) was an English politician and member of the Long Parliament. "His uncompromising spirit, as Chris Baker, writes, inspired both the Glorious Revolution of 1688 and the American Revolution of 1776." Sidney was charged with plotting against King Charles II and executed. His work represents the cornerstone of western thought because of his opposition to the Divine Rights of the Monarch and by proposing such concepts as limited government. Lowndes IV p2394. Not listed in Rothschild who records a later edition. Front hinge cracked, but holding firm. Some light rubbing to head and foot of the spine. Old repair to front blank. Otherwise internally a fresh clean copy. Bookseller Inventory # 6964
