Born in Candia NH, 1822, and wed at age 22 to her childhood friend, Frederick Smyth (1819-1899), Emily Lane Smyth was a teacher, knowledgeable in business, a gardener, a hostess for her husband's public affairs visitors, a world traveler, and a charity worker. Following her January 1885 death to Bright's Disease, letters of condolance came from far and near, including from the Secretary of the Navy, the Henry Ward Beechers, Mary A Livermore, and many more. All are included here, with an account of her life and comments by her minister. This is an original Memorial volume with a full page steel engraving of Emily Lane Smyth, from a photo taken at 'The Willows', Feb. 20, 1882, with her facsimile signature beneath, protected by tissue. Store Description

Hi, Folks ... Mom said, 'I need to downsize'. Moving to assisted living, what she couldn't take included 8,000-plus books & records. A decade later, my upcountry barn is bursting. Books multiply as others recycle priorities. I now have 30,000 or more books (not yet all online) looking for good homes, and my learning curve has been a roller coaster. I celebrate word-crafters, thought-tumblers, laughter ... the arts of communication at every turn. I preserve, protect, and share. I am also Hedgehog Publishing, 'Words & Pictures by & for Folks with Prickly Backs, Soft Bellies, & Small Brains'.
