About this Item

PRIESTLEY, Joseph. Discourses Relating to the Evidences of Revealed Religion, Delivered in the Church of the Universalists, at Philadelphia, 1796. And Published at the Request of Many of the Hearers. Phila.: Printed for T. Dobson, by John Thompson, 1796. 1st ed. xx, [2], 426 pp. Orig. full speckled calf, gilt-ruled spine, gilt-lettered red morocco spine label. Light toning and foxing, some pencil marginalia, else a very good copy. Though best remembered today as a scientist and educatior, Priestly wrote many volumes on Unitarian theology. This work is dedicated "To John Adams, Vice-President of the United States of America." "Priestley's versatilty and his peculiar qualities of mind were more clearly manifested in his theological and political writings than in his science. Brought up as a Calvinist, he early became allied with liberal theology . By the time he went to Warrington his Unitarian ('Socinian') beliefs were well developed, i.e., he rejected the Atonement and the inspiration of the sacred text. In 1755 he put forward the doctrine of the homogeneity of man, which brought upon him the accusation of atheism." DAB. Bookseller Inventory # 60129
