Brown cloth boards with blind embossed design on cover and faded gilt lettering on spine. Fair condition only. Significant chipping and tearing to spine and joints; front board is almost completely detached; moderate rubbing to edges with boards exposed at corners; mild scuffing and soiling. Hinges are badly cracked, but binding is still fairly tight. Interior has moderate foxing throughout. Two bookplates from previous owner on front pastedown. Some writing in blue pen on front pastedown and copyright page. Rear free endpaper is missing. Text block has a gilt top stain. Includes a folding map that is a facsimile of Marquette's map. Map measures approximately 14.5 x 20.5 inches and is in good condition with a few small tears (one is repaired with tape), one large stain, light toning, and some creasing. This book details the early narratives of the discovery and exploration of the Mississippi River, featuring sections on Marquette, La Salle, Allouez, and others.
