For the Successful Breeding of All Cichlids:

The book can also be an invaluable reference and source for any Tropical Fish Hobbyist, especially Cichlid keepers, as the book covers breeding signs and behaviour patterns, the perfect water conditions and the importance of routines and keeping fish free from disease.

Authors Editorial and Review:

"This book has been a favourite with Tropical Fish Keepers and a Best Seller now for over 25 years. The Discus Fish, King of the Aquarium is the hardest species to breed and keep in captivity. By following the routines and methods in this book, ensures any hobbyist can keep successfully any type of tropical fish, be it a community aquarium full of tropical fishes, or seeking to specially breed cichlids and other species of interest successfully. The fish food menu's inside this book I think are very unique, where folk can make up large amounts of specially prepared food that can be frozen down and used when required, creating vast savings on fish food and providing the very best for your fish, with a high protein diet and with all the essential vitamins and nutrients, for healthy thriving fish. - Alastair R Agutter.

Build An Optimal Trickle Filtration System:

Finally, complete details and diagrams of the Author's Power Vain Trickle Filtration System: designed for all large tropical fish tanks and achieving the optimal conditions in a naturally planted Aquarium, with techniques also on Lighting, to achieve even flowering of water plants using Mercury Vapour lighting on timers, for sun rise and sunsets.

The Discus Book - Published in Paperback and Digital Book Editions and available world-wide!

From the Author: Dear Readers, Tropical Fish Hobbyists and Aquarists,

In 1988 I began writing 'The Discus Book' where I covered my experiences, when I successfully bred in captivity the symphysodon species after several years of attempts, including the many heartaches from trail and error, as very little was still known on the subject of breeding these majestic and beautiful species of fish, known as 'The King of the Aquarium' in the late 1970's and 1980's.

There were two main reasons why I wanted to breed these beautiful fish in captivity. One being, as an ardent aquarist and enthusiast that began at a very early age as a young boy. Where I began to breed many species and my first success story were with 'Blue Acara' Cichlids. From then on, I began to breed many varieties of Cichlids, including Firemouths and Jack Dempsey. Then in the mid to late 1970's, the great Rift Lake Cichlids from Tanganyika and Malawi began to arrive in Tropical Fish stores and soon I found myself breeding these species, with great success and in abundance. I then began to hear about a breeder in American of Discus, known as Jack Wattley and began to read articles about these fascinating and beautiful species, we all know today as discus. I also discovered articles written by Dr. Eduard Schmidt-Focke on breeding these species and was hooked as they say!

My second reason for breeding the Discus in captivity, derived from reading the articles of Jack Wattley, Dr Eduard Schmidt-Focke and Herbert Axelrod. Where these dedicated gentlemen aired concern for the species, as more were caught from the wild. For sadly, man had finally reached the distant and unspoilt part of the world, we know in South America to be the Amazon Rain Forest. The Great River Amazon and many other adjoining Rivers and regions, is the native habitat for the symphysodon species. However these species and others were under threat!

So as a passionate advocate for our Wild Life and the threat of specie extinction and the evolved complexities of reproduction. I dedicated my time to successfully breed these species in captivity. Then from my experiences, I began to document my findings and techniques, to successfully breed the species to share with others.

The Discus Book was written so it stood as a record for all other aquarists. Where the information could be shared in the world at large between aquarists to ensure these beautiful species survived and did not become another extinction statistic in our world.

Since 1988 and then 1989, when the book was first published. A great deal has advanced and changed today, but I hope the book continues to serve as a record and time capsule on breeding these species, where the information detailed is accurate and written by a dedicated aquarist.

I am confident even in our advanced and technical world today, there can be found valuable information from the past, where natural law teaches us continuously that evolution is based on continued gradual advancement, balance and refinement.

Warmest Regards and Best Wishes,

Alastair R Agutter
Author and Aquarist
