Contemporary half calf, gilt, a little rubbed. Some foxing, tear in crease of 1 plate, but a very good set. FIRST EDITION, the first 3 vols. only, containing parts of von Baer's Ueber Entwicklungsgeschichte der Thiere(1828), the first great work of modern embryology. Von Baer submitted his material on embryology to Burdach, whose unsatisfactory editing of it for Die Physiologie led von Baer to publish his Entwicklungsgeschichte. Both versions came out the same year. G-M 599 cites the 6 vols. of Burdach's treatise on physiology, which were all he published of a projected 10-vol.series. D.S.B. Wellcome II 271.
