About this Item

16mo. Green pebble-grain cloth with gilt spine lettering. 131pp. Good plus. Hinges starting but expertly and archivally reinforced, thus tight. Decent first U.S. edition of this 3-essay collection by the noted English pediatrics and obstetrics specialist (1816-98) remembered as founder of the first children's hospital in Great Britain. Top ownership signature (of three) on front flyleaf is that of physician Walter Hay (1830-99), a noted Chicago neurologist and medical leader who was active in the Fire Relief Committee that raised funds for medical needs in Chicago after the 1871 great Chicago fire -- he adds "Chicago / January, 1872" below his signature, the period when he was most active in this relief work; his oval purple inkstamp appears on the title page. Below Hay is ownership signature of Hugh L. Patrick, notable turn-of-the-century professor of neurology at the Chicago Polyclinic. And lastly below Patrick is the modern ownership signature of neurology professor David M. Levy, whose bookplate also graces the front pastedown. A nice first with ownership signatures of three noted neurologists. Bookseller Inventory # 40954
