About this title
The Diver Medical Technician is responsible for the care and treatment of injured divers from every walk of life. From the recreational diver, to the elite deep saturation commercial divers, to the military special operations divers, and everything in between. Diver Medical Technician—Care of the Injured Diver, addresses the knowledge and skills required for the DMT to care for the vast variety of injuries that can befall anyone working or playing in a subaquatic environment. Beyond the injuries sustained due to operating in a dysbaric environment, the Diver Medical Technician must care for numerous non-diving related injuries, injuries that occur in the diving workplace. This is the off-shore commercial environment, the public safety environment, and the field of military operations. These divers are not only exposed to the physics of the undersea world, but also the injury potential of the industrial workplace. In many cases the Diver Medical Technician is the only healthcare professional available with the skills and knowledge to save the life of the injured diver. This text addresses those skills and the knowledge base required to treat those injured in the diving and off-shore environment.About the Author:

He has been a licensed Emergency Medical Technician Instructor Coordinator since the mid-1980s and a Diver Medical Technician instructor for over 10 years, developing and conducting a variety of medical training programs including Emergency Medical Technician, Advanced Prehospital Trauma Life Support, Remote Duty Medic, Tactical Emergency Medical Technician, and Diver Medical Technician. His diving career began with the fire service in the mid-1970s as a public safety and inland commercial diver. Commander Ellerman has been involved in various aspects of diving and diver training, including advanced training in response to diver emergencies. Students he has trained over the years in his DMT program include military, special operations, commercial off-shore, saturation, and recreational divers, along with emergency medical personnel who respond to diver emergencies. He currently works with, and supports, one of the worlds’ busiest hyperbaric chambers for diving injuries located in Central America and has done so for the past 14 years. This work has allowed him to be involved in the treatment of hundreds, upon hundreds, of Miskito Indian lobster divers who have suffered severe Type II DCS injuries along with injured recreational divers. Currently, Commander Ellerman and Cornerstone Medical Services hold dual accreditation from both the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology and the International Marine Contractors Association as a Diver Medic training facility and instructor.
