About this Item

THE INFERNO from La Divina Commedia of Dante Alighieri. As Translated by the Reverend Harry Francis Cary, and Illustrated with the Seven Engravings by William Blake New York: Printed by Richard Ellis for Cheshire House, 1931., 1931. A handsome edition, hand-set in 22 point Caslon, with the Blake engravings well-printed from copper plates in the size of the originals. Commisoned by Linnell, Blake began to illustrate the Divine Comedy in 1824 at the age of 67. Although over a hundred drawings were completed only seven were engraved. Editions were printed in 1838 and 1892. Less common than the limitation of 1200 copies would suggest. Folio, (10), 210pp, 7 engraved plates. Full calf, boards blind tooled, however, the b inding of this huge folio is very worn and rubbed about fair, internally the copy is very good, a scarce Blake and Dante collaboration only one other copy on line for sale from a reputable ABAA seller. this copy could use some love. Size: Atlas Folio. Bookseller Inventory # 006115
