This Massachusetts attorney and politician, whose reputation for integrity earned him the moniker "Honest John," served that state as U.S. representative (1824-34), two-term governor (1834-35, 1841-43) and two-term senator (1835-41, 1845-53) nicknamed "Honest John." Large and attractive DS, 1p + integral blank, 10" X 16", Boston, MA, 1834 March 31. Very good. Mild folds. Ornate appointment naming Edmund Cushing of Worcester a county commissioner for Worcester County. Large flute-edged paper seal at upper left intact and handsome, just below which Davis signs boldly in brown ink. Also signed boldly at lower right by Secretary of the Commonwealth Edward D. Bangs (1790-1838). A lovely Davis example from his third month in office. Bookseller Inventory # 39354
