About this Item
1 page, 10 x 8.5 inches, no place, January 1, 1868. Partly printed document signed "G. A. Trenholm" -- a coupon bond between merchants Theodore D. Wagner and William L. Trenholm of Charleston on behalf of John Fraser and Co. and James Robb and Charles T. Lowndes. Boldly signed on verso guaranteeing payment of the bond by his son William L. Trenholm, who later became Controller of the Currency in the Cleveland Administration. The recto contains the signed contract by Theodore D. Wagner and William L. Trenholm with the addition of two signed attached coupons. Theodore D. Wagner was a Confederate politician and original signer of the South Carolina Ordinance of Secession, Dec. 20, 1860. Additionally signed by: Charles T. Lowndes, founder of T. Lowndes And Company, South Carolina's oldest insurance company. It remains family-owned to this day. An exceptional document that links all of the biggest players responsible for the success of Confederate blockade running and the formation of the CSA Navy. Usual weaknesses at the folds; otherwise very good condition. Confederate Secretary of the Treasury, active in blockade running in the early part of the war, captured by Union soldiers. It was through his credit abroad as a cotton broker that the CSA built their Navy. Seller Inventory # 220392
