This American career diplomat served as U.S. ambassador to Germany (1938-39) and as advisor to the Secretary of State (1940-41). DS, 8pp (rectos only), 8" X 12", Washington, DC, 1939. A printed (mimeographed) press release issued by the Department of State on 25 August, 1939, titled "Remarks by the Honorable Hugh Wilson, Ambassador to Germany, on the Occasion of the Annual Banquet of the Fortieth National Encampment of Veterans of Foreign Wars at Boston." Very good. Mild even age toning; staple holes at upper left of each page, not affecting text. The soon-to-be-former ambassador's tactful comments on "how shall we keep the United States out of war?" -- boldly signed in full (along with "Washington -- 1939") in black ink on the title page. A delicate topic addressed at a critical time. Quite unusual piece, as press releases such as this were normally issued and largely destroyed by their recipients; very few are likely survived at all, much less signed. A remarkable piece.
