About this Item

"Originally published in Munich in 1912, THE BLUER REITER ALMANAC is now what Klaus Lankheit, one of the period's leading scholars, calls 'one of the most urgently required works of literature on art theory and culture' in thre twentieth century. Edited by two young painters concerned with the dissemination of information and illustrations of modern art in a worlds mostly hostile to it, this anthology of essays by leading artists and muscians of the day and reproductions of many kinds of art provided a common spiritual basis for European members of the BLAUE REITER movenment to seek an expansion of the traditional boundaries of artistic expression-in Wassily Kandinsky's words,'.to tear down the walls between the arts' and create a total, international synthesis of cultrure." This book has 296 pages and is profusely illustrated. The text contains NO internal marks whatsoever. Bookseller Inventory # 062929

About this title

The Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider) art movement was founded in 1911, by the young painters Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, and remained active in Europe until 1914. Originally published in "Munich", in 1912, and edited by Kandinsky and Marc, "The Blaue Reiter Almanac" presented the movement's synthesis of international culture to the European avant-garde at large. In both the selection of the essays and its innovative interplay of word and image, the Almanac remains one of the most critically important works on artistic theory and culture of the twentieth century. This edition, long unavailable in English and indispensable to any student of modernism, includes the original documents and musical notations, as well as essays by Kandinsky, Schonberg, Marc, and others, and an extensive critical introduction, placing the "Blaue Reiter" in context for contemporary readers. Nearly 150 illustrations, from ancient, primitive, and contemporary sources, capture the wide-ranging passions that inspired Kandinsky's attempt to make modernism accessible across national and chronological boundaries.
