About this Item

Size: 4to. 11-volume set (complete). Text body is clean and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Published 1853-1858. Edited by E. B. O'Callaghan. Original black embossed cloth, gilt lettering on spine, folding maps. All of the volumes have chipping at spine ends, corners worn, moderate to heavy foxing on end papers and last few pages, minimal to heavy foxing on interior pages. Four of the volumes have offsetting on a few pages where the previous owner had pressed leaves. Specific notes on each volume: Vol. I is 646 pp. and has a good-sized damp stain on the cover and inside throughout the book; the color frontis map shows the damp stain, but it is not particularly noticeable; one large fold-out map has a 1" tear at gutter and the damp stain; third fold-out map also has damp stain. Vol. II has 771 pp., title page, frontis & tissue have heavy foxing; interior has light foxing except where leaves were pressed, where foxing and offsetting is moderate. Vol. III has 1028 pp., some moderate to heavy foxing throughout. Vol. IV has 1192 pp., corners very worn and chipping at spine ends worse than the others; apparent rodent damage to fore-edge of pages near bottom corner, no damage to text; foxing heavier on end papers than other volumes, but interior is whiter and brighter than other volumes with minimal foxing throughout most of the volume. Vol. V has 985 pp., covers soiled and scuffed, rodent damage at top corners; front cover starting to separate at bottom of spine; damp stain at top margin; about 25 pages have yellowed badly, reason unknown. Vol. VI has 1028 pp. and a damp stain on the bottom edge of the blank margin. Vol. VII has 1007 pp., covers are scuffed and soiled, some sort of damage about the size of the old silver dollar at fore-edge front cover; there is a large damp stain throughout starting at the gutter and moving out, consequently the rear free end paper is partially stuck to the rear end paper. Vol. VIII has 817 pp., the edge on one fold-out map (edge nearest gutter) has gotten folded up and it has a 1" tear; second map in very good condition; there is some minor damage to the top edge of a few pages. Vol. IX has 1114 pp., the fold-out plan and fold-out map are moderately foxed; foxing on end papers is heavy. Vol. X has 1167 pp., corners badly bumped and front cover is loose and separating at bottom of spine. Index volume has 686 pp. and the back strip has come off and is attached with tape. Overall, the set would be very good for research or historical reading despite its flaws. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 80 lbs 0 oz. Category: History; Inventory No: 002642.
