[ANS] Dolley Payne Todd Madison. Dolley Payne Todd Madison (1768-1849), entertaining as wife of James Madison, Secretary of State. Manuscript note "Mr. Madison request the pleasure of Mr. Hunt's company at dinner on Thursday next ½ past 3 o'clock, dated Dec. 19, 1803, in the hand of Dolley Madison. Dolley's love of entertaining led to Thomas Jefferson's asking for her assistance in entertaining which was simplified since her husband James Madison lived in the White house with Jefferson. Acting as hostess for Jefferson provided her with a great deal of experience in Washington's political and social scenes. Dolley became one of the most powerful first ladies in Washington (and the first to be known as First Lady) when her husband became president. Paper measures 8" x 9 ½" with folds, some toning and marks where seal resided. Bookseller Inventory #
