Quarto. (4) 252, (4) 260pp. Full contemporary red pebbled Morocco by Henry Stikeman (stamp-signed "Stikeman" to lower edge of front turn-in) with gilt ruling on covers and spine, gilt tooling and lettering on spine; decorative gilt-stamped turn-ins and raised bands housed in a red cloth slipcase. Gilt top edge and marbled endpapers. A handsome edition of Byron's major unfinished work printed on thick cotton rag watermarked (Arnold) paper. Byron's satiric poem based on the epic legend of Don Juan portraits a charming young man who is not a womanizer but succumbs to the advances of beautiful women he encounters. When the first and second canto were published anonymously in 1819 it became very popular but was heavily criticized for its 'immoral content.' The XVII Canto, written by Byron during the time leading up to his death, lacks the narrative content and is instead a response to his critics. Slipcase with some wear along edges, rubbed and sunned. Binding rubbed along joints. Slipcase in overall good-, binding and interior in very good condition. Bookseller Inventory #
