Although Ricordi's Milan ediiton might be supposed the first printing of this work, this is by no means certain. The first performance was given in Paris in January 1843, at which time Donizetti himself was court composer to the Emperor of Austria in Vienna; Donizetti himself conducted the first Vienna performance on May 14, for which he added the duet 'Cheti, cheti.'
