Chicago: Reilly & Lee Co., 1908 [but 1938]. Later Edition. Octavo; publisher's red cloth, color pictorial paste-on to front cover, black spine lettering; 226pp.; half-tone illus. throughout. Joints starting to crack, front joint worse-so, textblock significantly toned due to inferior paper quality, wormhole to top textblock edge not approaching text, contemporary ownership signature on front flyleaf, else a Good to Very Good, internally clean and sound copy. The fourth book in the Oz series written shortly after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The story begins with an earthquake opening up a crack in the earth and Dorothy and friends tumbling into a cavern. The work, Baum's shortest, went through innumerable printings, this one prepared for distribution by Sears and Roebuck, the cover illustration adapted from one of Neill's original color plates.
