This book was one of the author's personal copies. Sub-title A Romance of Mystery and Adventure in Mexico of To-day. John St. John, a sometimes resident of Knickerbockerland in New York state, is on a westward bound liner in the middle of the Atlantic when he receives a Marconigram with a mysterious message concerning the sign of the cross. The message has been sent from the President's Palace in Mexico City. After settling affairs at home, St. John travels to Mexico to investigate. Adventures ensue with beautiful women, evil Aztecs, and intrigue aplenty. With a frontis. and five (5) half-tone plate illustrations by Joseph Cummings Chase. This novel was made into a serial movie in 1917 titled THE MYSTERY OF THE DOUBLE CROSS. *** Bound in gray pictorial cloth boards and spine. The covers have light soil and wear, top corners bumped.
