4to, pp. 37 in unsewn signatures. Printed wrappers and decorated cloth-backed boards with silk ties, as issued. The number '103' is written, very small in ink, on the top right corner of the board binding. SMALL BOOK LABEL OF OLYMPIA PRESS BIBLIOGRAPHER PATRICK KEARNEY TO INSIDE FRONT WRAPPER. Boards a little chipped and grubby, silk ties badly worn, but contents have been very well preserved. 12 lithographs, coloured by stencil and in round or oval formats, by Gerda Wegener. First edition. Wegener's illustrations had first appeared around 1921, published as a small, stand-alone portfolio. But in the tradition of Aretino who, after being impressed by some erotic engravings by Marcantonio Raimondi famously composed a series of obscene sonnets to accompany them, Louis Perceau was invited by the publisher Duflou to do the same, and so provided the verse for Wegener's exquisite, and exquisitely erotic, pochoir images. The result was this extremely scarce and very beautiful volume. Gerda Wegener had quite a life. Born in Denmark in 1886, she moved to Paris in 1912, where she was a successful illustrator whose work often featured in the society magazines of the day. Her sideline in erotic illustration gradually became the focus of her career, helped in no small part by her husband Einar, her favourite model, who would often pose for her in women's clothes. In 1930 Einar had the first known sexual reassignment surgery and became Lili Elbe, and was lovingly supported through the transition by his/her wife. Dutel 1356 and 1434. Pia 363.
