About this title

Synopsis:

Downhome: Dispatches from Dixie is a collection of his true-life Southern yarns that he likes best. Some of the locales and names are familiar. Virginia Tech. Music Row. Junior Samples. Willie Nelson. A family reunion. But others concern places and events most folks never heard about. A tiny island in the Chesapeake Bay that time forgot. A Moonpie Murder. The beach game of Halfrubber. The Santa Train. With often humorous, always insightful prose, these pieces blur the border between journalism and literature.

About the Author:

A national correspondent in the Washington bureau of Cox Newspapers, Bob Dart covered the big stories about America for four decades. He has written from battlefields from Vietnam to Iraq. He reported from the press gallery when the House of Representatives voted to impeach Bill Clinton, from New York City on September 11, 2001, and for months from New Orleans beginning two days after Hurricane Katrina arrived. But his favorite stories have always come from the back roads and colorful characters of his native South. Born and reared in Glynn County on the Georgia coast, Bob Dart was drafted into the Army shortly after graduating from Florida State University in 1968. As a combat correspondent in Vietnam, he wrote for Stars and Stripes and other military publications. After his hitch, he earned a masters degree in journalism from the University of Georgia. He covered the South for the Atlanta Journal and Constitution before moving to the Cox Washington Bureau in 1983. Since then, Dart has embedded with an infantry scout troop during the invasion of Iraq and has covered presidential campaigns, earthquakes, national political conventions, terrorist attacks, hurricanes and the Olympics even carrying the torch. Bob Dart continues to work as a national correspondent for Cox Newspapers, a chain of about twenty dailies including the Atlanta Journal and Constitution and other papers from North Carolina to Texas.
