We believe that it would have had the same ideals that were used in the formations of organizations in Massachusetts "formed for the sole purposes of promoting the mechanic arts and extending the practice of benevolence." John J. Taylor 1808-1892 was graduated from Harvard University in 1829. He came to Owego in 1834, where he soon ranked as one of the ablest lawyers in southern New York. He was district attorney of Tioga County from 1841 to 1843. He was a member of the 27th. Congress in 1852-54 where he gained some distinction as a speaker, particularly on account of . Kansas-Nebraska bill. He was prominent in securing the construction of the South Central Railroad from Owego to Auburn. Reference EARLY OWEGO by LeRoy Kingman. 1907 and 1987 pages 138-139.
