About this Item

Small Octavo. 960 pages, index, [38] leaves of plates engraved by H. Robinson. Regular title page and an engraved title page by J. Archer and W. Finden. Presented by his "Brother Officers".a red morocco plate lettered in gilt honors Ernest Lewis for his service in India with the 21st Foot of the 2nd West India Regiment. Later he became a founder of the Army and Navy Co-operative that later became one of J. Walter Thompson's first retail clients in 1930. His son Donald Swain Lewis was the second highest-ranked officer in the royal Fling Corps of the Royal Air Force but was killed in action in the First World War. With the success of the 1859 edition, Rutledge kept the text and added the engravings of the characters of Shakespeare (mostly the beautiful women such as Ophelia). The review of Mary Nilan in the Shakespeare Quarterly (Spring, 1975) notes that after an earlier period of neglect of the Tempest, Thomas Campbell provides: "a comparatively grave counterpart to A Midsummer Night's Dream.for its gayety is only less abandoned and frolicksome." A handsome set bound in full maroon morocco decoratively stamped in blind, raised bands with title gilt, all edges trimmed in brass with central brass shield engraved with a dragon, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Only an occasional scattering of foxing but mostly clean and bright. Bookseller Inventory # 018676
