23 pp; 13 figs. Original plain wrappers. Stitched as issued. Vertical crease. Spine worn. First Edition. One of James Dwight Dana's earliest publications. INSCRIBED BY JAMES D. DANA TO ASA GRAY: "To Dr. Asa Gray/ with the author's regards." The inscription is crossed through but is very readable (see photos). It was then re-inscribed: "Boston Soc. of Nat. History/ from Prof. Asa Gray/ March 30 1846." "[Dana's] prolonged intimacy with the illustrious botanist of Cambridge [Gray] was one of the greatest intellectual pleasures of Dana's life. They were kindred natures devoted to kindred studies. Gray was but three years the senior,--and in early life this may have given him a slight degree of authority. Subsequently there was nothing but reciprocity" (Gilman, Life of James Dwight Dana, p. 293).
